Project Summary
Flowstone Floors was appointed as the specialist resin flooring contractor for the refurbishment of the multi-storey car park at The Lowry Outlet, Salford Quays. Covering 7,594m², the project involved installing a new Deckshield ID resin flooring system with a non-slip finish across the intermediate parking decks while the shopping centre remained fully operational.
Completed over a six-week programme between October 2025 and January 2026, the installation restored the performance of the existing deck surfaces while providing improved slip resistance, durability and long-term protection against water ingress.
The Challenge
The client required a commercial flooring solution capable of refurbishing ageing intermediate car park decks without disrupting the day-to-day operation of one of Greater Manchester’s busiest retail destinations.
The project presented several technical and logistical challenges, including:
- Maintaining safe access for customers and retailers throughout the programme.
- Preparing 7,594m² of existing deck surfaces to a consistent standard.
- Delivering a high-quality installation within a fixed six-week programme.
- Producing a durable anti-slip finish capable of withstanding constant vehicle traffic.
Every phase required close coordination with the client and careful sequencing to minimise disruption while maintaining consistent installation quality across the entire project.
Why Deckshield ID Was Selected
Following a detailed inspection and technical assessment, Deckshield ID was recommended as the most appropriate system for the intermediate parking decks.
Designed specifically for multi-storey car parks, the system provides a textured anti-slip finish while protecting the concrete substrate from moisture penetration and daily vehicle traffic. The system is certified to OS8 and EN 1504-2 and also helps reduce tyre squeal, improving the overall user experience within enclosed parking environments.
Surface Preparation
Successful resin flooring installations begin with proper preparation. Flowstone Floors mechanically prepared the full 7,594m² deck to create a clean, sound substrate capable of achieving maximum adhesion.
The preparation process included:
- Mechanical shot blasting to remove previous coatings and contaminants.
- Diamond grinding where required to achieve the correct surface profile.
- Inspection of prepared areas before resin installation commenced.
Consistent preparation across such a large area was essential to achieving uniform system performance.
Primer Application
Deckshield SF Primer was applied at approximately 1.5kg/m² across the prepared substrate. Coverage rates and curing times were monitored carefully to ensure the primer provided the correct bond for the subsequent resin layers.
Quartz Broadcast
Following primer application, the floor received a full blind broadcast using DKI Quartz aggregate between 0.3mm and 0.8mm at approximately 2kg/m².
The aggregate created the textured anti-slip profile required for a busy commercial car park while providing a strong mechanical key for the finishing coat.
The system was allowed to cure fully before the next stage commenced.
Finish Coat Application
Once curing had been completed, excess aggregate was removed by brushing and industrial vacuuming before the Deckshield ID finish coat was applied in accordance with the manufacturer’s technical data sheet.
This final application produced a durable coloured surface designed to withstand continuous vehicle movements while maintaining consistent appearance throughout the parking areas.
Curing and Protection
Following installation, the completed commercial flooring system was protected from water ingress for a minimum of seven days to allow the resin to cure correctly.
Each phase was completed in accordance with manufacturer recommendations to maximise long-term performance.
Planning and Project Management
Working within a live shopping centre required careful planning from the outset. Flowstone Floors developed a phased installation programme that allowed sections of the car park to remain operational while refurbishment progressed through each work zone.
The project team maintained close communication with the client throughout the programme, coordinating access requirements and ensuring each phase was completed before progressing to the next.
Experienced operatives trained in resin car park systems carried out every stage of the installation under continuous site supervision.
Project Results
- Area refurbished: 7,594m²
- Programme: Completed within the planned six-week installation window.
- Live environment: Shopping centre remained operational throughout the project.
- Surface performance: New textured anti-slip finish installed across the intermediate decks.
- Protection: Waterproof resin flooring system helping prevent further deterioration of the concrete structure.
Client Outcome
The completed Deckshield ID installation restored the appearance and performance of the intermediate parking decks while providing a durable commercial flooring solution designed for long-term service.
The refurbished surface offers improved slip resistance for vehicles and pedestrians, enhanced protection against water ingress and a cleaner, brighter environment for visitors using The Lowry Outlet car park.
The project also demonstrates Flowstone Floors’ capability to deliver large-scale resin flooring refurbishment projects within live commercial environments while maintaining programme, quality and safety standards.
